Shipping to Alaska and Hawaii

It amazes me that you can ship an item free of charge to anywhere in the continental US, but when you ship to Alaska you charge the highest rate you can possibly charge. Is this so that you can send items free to the rest of the country? Alaska has limited stores that we are able to purchase items that we need, and people like you take advantage of the situation. I would not order again from this website unless I were in a desperate situation like I am today. My suggestion for shipping options is to offer USPS, it is usually more reasonable than Fed-ex.

Shipping outside the lower 48 states is always a challenge.  Our charge to this customer was about $20 less than the actual charge to us from FedEx so we do make an effort to have a level playing field but shipments to Alaska and Hawaii are simply too expensive to build into our pricing structure.  It is also unfortunate that we can’t use the USPS.  The problem is that we ship these products from huge warehouses in large quantities and the warehouse computer systems aren’t equipped to deal with the USPS so it isn’t an option for us.

A Lighting Designer Advances Brilliant Energy-Saving Ideas

Have you ever heard of daylight harvesting? The idea is to leverage the available natural light for greater energy-efficiency and esthetic value. If you are green-minded and planning to build a new home, daylight harvesting is an amazing energy saving concept.

Linda Segreto of Schrager Lighting Design in Ridgefield, CT says the first step is to hire a green architect who will have a good understanding of how to maximize natural light and position your house accordingly on the lot.

The second step is to hire a green-minded lighting designer to work in conjunction with the architect.

The direction of the sun and which way your home faces is very important for daylight harvesting, Segreto explains.

For example, bedrooms don't need natural light during the day, making a Northern exposure perfectly acceptable.

On the other hand, for rooms you spend a lot of time in - like the kitchen or family room - facing South or West will provide plenty of natural ambient light.

Another savvy energy-saving idea is to install a dimming system that controls lighting throughout the entire home. According to Segreto, the best system is Lutron's Graphic Eye. This product allows the owner to schedule a sophisticated lighting plan for every fixture in the house with dimming capability. Not only can lamps be scheduled to turn on at a specific time, but at a specific power level as well.

"The beauty of the Lutron system is that you can create and program lighting scenes for each room, judiciously choosing energy levels for esthetic reasons and cost savings at the same time," she says.

Segreto explains how lighting scenes work. A morning scene in the kitchen might include the light over the kitchen table set at 50%, counter lights at 50% and ambient light at 50%, depending upon window size and the available natural light. The evening scene after dinner would be completely different with the light over the table and countertops at 30% and wall washers at 60-70%.

The controls are located in a wall box and are programmed after installation. Then, as the seasons change and the lighting needs change with them, the program will need to be adjusted.

The schedule can also be manually over-ridden when special needs arise, like creating the mood for a party. Using a system like this saves a lot of energy because all the lights are not constantly on 100% power levels. Nor do you need to rely on memory to turn down dimmers or shut off lights. Plus, dimmers extend bulb life, which provides another layer of savings.

A system like this requires bulbs that are dimmable. The good news is that compact fluorescent bulbs, which are such big energy savers, are now dimmable and come in almost every style and size, just like traditional incandescent bulbs. Even though these bulbs cost more upfront, the energy savings make for a quick return on the investment.

    I wanted to make special mention of Jessie in regards to a recent order I placed with your company. I had a challenge of trying to find a narrow 1-light wall sconce and in trying to find a complete line that would include a chandelier, an island light, and a 2-light wall sconce.

    I originally found the LaScalla line from Maxim at Lamps Plus but they didn't carry much of the line. I stumbled across your company on Bizrate and found the whole line of lights.The next concern was making sure that the base of the 1-light wall sconce was actually small enough to fit the narrow space. I had a experience in trying a wall sconce and found the dimension they gave for width was actually the width of the glass, not the base. I called and spoke to Jessie who volunteered to call Maxim and ask them to get the actual measurements. They didn't get back with her initially so she called them back and again requested the measurement. It took a third call from Jessie and this time she waited on the line while they got the measurements.

    This type of effort is a great example of someone taking the time to perform the art of customer service and getting the information needed. If the sconce had been too big, the  sale would not have occurred naturally. If Jessie had not taken the time to help me, it would have ended the same way. Because she put forth that effort and we found that the size worked, it was a win for me and hopefully a win for you. I was able to match everything and finish this project.

    Again, please thank her again for me. She did a great job and I just wanted to let you know.

The lamps arrived within the time stated. Unfortunately, one shade had some markings. I called customer service and spoke with Anita. She was able to have a replacement sent out within a day. I was so impressed with the customer service. I envisioned a problem getting the shade replaced, but it wasn't. I would certainly order from Lighting Showroom again simply for their customer service and the fact they stand behind their products.

On the page where I added the item to my cart #5334-rbz it stated free ground shipping. Upon entering my info 10.00 was added to my bill. False advertising!

Jessi saves the day

We thought we would share the email below with you……it seems like everyone has a deadline these days and it is so often hard to meet.  No matter what, something always seems to fall through at very last moment.  Expedited shipping would have been very expensive for this customer, so Jessi walked her order through in an attempt to have delivery made in time save the day.  Well, Jessi managed to get this order out the door later in the day and the customer received it with time to spare……way to go Jessi!!!!

Top Tips for Lighting Dining Rooms

The American Lighting Association offers the following tips for lighting a delightful dining room.

FIRST STEP: A chandelier in the middle of the room defines the space. Choose that fixture first, then work out with accent lights.

HANGING AROUND: Choose a chandelier with a diameter 12" less than width of table. The bottom of chandelier should be 30" above table.

TALL ORDERS: For ceilings nine feet or higher, consider a two-tier style chandelier to fill the space from the fixture's top to the ceiling.

DIMMER SHIMMER: Always use a dimmer on dining room lights. "Light becomes warmer as it is dimmed," says Dan Blitzer, American Lighting Association Continuing Educator.

HOME WORK: For those who use the dining room as a study area, consider bringing in a portable study lamp to brighten up the workspace. "Overhead lighting may work well for general studies, but in depth or close work demands more light," says Blitzer.

GET SMART: So-called "smart" dimmers, driven by microprocessors offer convenience. "When you have several layers of light, smart dimmers can be set to various ambiences. Press one button for dining, another for lighting up homework, another for party-time.

THE LAYERED LOOK: Use multiple layers of light in the dining room. Chandeliers provide the central focus. Accent lights on either side of the chandelier and at the room's perimeter brighten things up. Accessory lights on and/or over other furniture pieces fill in the background.

TABLE THIS: Table lamps add a soft, humanizing touch to a dining room. Display them on a buffet or breakfront.

Research results for lighting product brand advertising via isolated banner ads

As part of a continuing research program on brand advertising for the lighting industry, lightingshowroom.com tests the impact of isolated banner ads on sales performance. Recent testing for Hinkley Lighting shows a 31% increase for sales of Hinkley lighting products for the period April over March 2008. This particular test provided a link from a Google rank 1 page to a display of Hinkley Lighting collections.

Significantly, overall total sales were nearly flat for the same period so the increased sales volume for Hinkley was a market share change with the extra sales coming from other competing product lines. In general there is about a 2 week tail on featured vendor brand advertising programs. In other words people who saw the ad during April will, as a result of the ad, be making purchases for up to 19 days later.

This test looked at brand name banner advertising and did not address the issue of more granular studies of product types such as chandeliers, pendants, vanities, or outdoor lights. We anticipate that a more focused campaign would yield even higher returns though that study awaits sponsorship.

I absolutely hate shopping so this was the perfect way to view hundreds of different lighting options without having to leave my home. I had already visted several lighting stores but was not able to find what I was looking for. Lighting Showroom had EXACTLY what I wanted at an awesome price. The page that described the item I bought said that shipping was free. However, the order page levied a $10.00 shipping fee. It would be nice if both pages said the same thing.

Shipping is free for orders over $100. Minimum order charges are described on the shopping cart page during checkout. Since we can’t know until that step what is being ordered, it isn’t practical to put that description on every page. What we do say is that shipping if free on most items.

Well organized site that made it very easy to find what we were looking for with a large variety of items to choose from. I liked the fact the shipping was free and that returns didn't come with a restocking fee. Other sites I've visited charged up to 25% for returns. Lighting Showroom allowed me to order multiple items knowing that I could return what I didn't want for a full refund.
